St Bart’s $46M aged care home for homeless partly funded by $30M Federal grant

St Bart’s has secured Federal funding for its long-planned aged care home in East Perth, with the Albanese Government confirming this afternoon it will contribute $30 million towards the $46 million build.

The seven-storey facility will deliver 80 single ensuite rooms for people over 50 with a history of homelessness, including separate floors for men and women, on-site access to clinical and allied health services, and culturally inclusive features such as a yarning circle and outdoor areas.

The project was recommended for approval in July at an estimated cost of $39 million, but construction costs have since risen to $46 million. The Government contribution will cover around two-thirds of the total, under the Aged Care Capital Assistance Program.

Aged Care and Seniors Minister Sam Rae said the grant is part of $651 million allocated nationally for 146 aged care infrastructure projects.

“Every new bed the Albanese Government funds will help take pressure off the hospital system in WA and transition more older Australians into more appropriate care sooner,” he said.

The East Perth site is located near St Bart’s existing James Watson residential aged care home. However, the new facility is not expected to be completed before 2028.

The announcement comes during Minister Rae’s two-day visit to Western Australia, following State Premier Roger Cook and Ministers Meredith Hammat and Simone McGurk lobbying Canberra for additional aged care investment last month.
