Summerset breaks ground on fourth Victorian continuum-of-care village

New Zealand operator Summerset, which has 40 villages completed or in development across Australia and New Zealand, has marked the start of its fourth Victorian village with a sod-turning at Oakleigh South, 17km south-east of Melbourne’s CBD, ahead of construction commencing next week.

The ceremony on Tuesday, 21 October, was led by Wurundjeri Elder Perry Wandin with a traditional Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, honouring the cultural heritage of the land and its people. City of Monash Mayor Paul Klisaris joined Summerset staff, partners and local community members.

The milestone underscores Summerset’s continued investment in Victoria, adding to current developments at Cranbourne North, 39km southeast of Melbourne which opened in 2024, Chirnside Park, 38km east of the city, where the first stage is nearing completion), and Torquay, southwest of Melbourne where earthworks are underway.

Summerset purchased the Oakleigh South site in September 2021 and received unanimous Monash Council approval for the village plans in mid-2024.

“Today is a significant moment for Summerset in Australia,” said Development Manager Nick Yencken. “We’re proud to officially join the Oakleigh South community and look forward to welcoming residents to a vibrant, contemporary village that offers high-quality homes and a full continuum of care.”

The Oakleigh South village will deliver a boutique mix of 100 independent living homes and assisted living apartments, plus a 66-bed residential care home, enabling residents to age in place as needs evolve. Close to The Links shopping centre, medical facilities and two premier golf courses, the village is well positioned for relaxed retirement living with strong community connections.

Summerset also holds three additional Victorian sites – Craigieburn, Drysdale and Mernda – at various stages of permits and planning approvals.
