Levande has officially opened The Cambridge, a new 28-storey retirement village in Epping, 18km north-west of the Sydney CBD.

The $200 million project has already sold 102 of its 158 apartments and is now the tallest retirement village in Australia – and the third tallest in the world behind developments in Chicago and Toronto.

Delivered by Richard Crookes Constructions, The Cambridge sits within a larger redevelopment of the Our Lady Help of Christians church and school site, undertaken in partnership with the Catholic Diocese of Broken Bay. The bottom four floors house Opal HealthCare’s 132-bed Epping Grand residential aged care facility, with retirement living rising above.

Levande CEO Kevin McCoy said the ambition was to deliver a new model for urban seniors housing.

“The vision for The Cambridge was to create something more than just a building. We wanted a community that would change the way people think about retirement – a place where residents thrive, where they make friends, and where different generations mix,” he said.

He described the project as a “one-of-its-kind cogeneration precinct”, integrating retirement living, aged care, parish facilities and a primary school across one connected site to foster intergenerational engagement and support residents’ wellbeing.

Eighty settlements are due by year-end, with six apartment types available for over-65s, ranging from $790,000 to $2.4 million. Designed by architectus, the building includes a swimming pool, Gold Class-style cinema, gym, beauty salon and private dining room.

To mark the opening, three professional abseilers descended one side of the 28-storey tower before the ribbon was cut.
