Tapiolas family’s Parkside Group plans second retirement village
A retirement village proposal by the Tapiolas family’s Parkside Group is progressing through the Townsville planning system, with a development application now at public notification stage.
The application for Parkside Annandale Retirement Village, lodged in December 2024 via town planners Brazier Motti, includes 159 dwellings – 65 Independent Living Units across two three-storey apartment buildings, and 94 detached villas – on University Road, Annandale, a southwestern suburb of Townsville.
Parkside Group already owns and operates Brooklea Lifestyle Village in Cranbrook, also in the city’s southwest.
Six different variations of units are proposed within the apartment buildings:
- from 75msq to 128msq in Gross Floor Area (GFA) to offer a variety of housing choice, at different price points. The units include one, two- and three-bedroom variations combined with 1.5, 2- and 2.5-bathroom variations;
- The ground floor apartments are provided ample open space comprising a patio and a low maintenance yard; and
- The apartments on levels 1 and 2 have balconies that are a minimum of 16mq in area.

Six different variations of villas are proposed:
- From 105msq to 168msq in GFA to ensure a variety of options;
- Two- and three-bedroom variations combined with one, 1.5- or two-bathroom variations. Some have yards located at the front of the villa and others at the rear.
In addition, the site will feature a community centre, including:
- administration desk;
- parcel room;
- Manager’s office;
- Kitchenette/staff lunch room;
- Meeting room;
- two multi-purpose rooms;
- Gym/fitness studio;
- Cinema;
- Amenities;
- Entertainment;
- Virtual golf room;
- Library/ seating room;
- Residents lounge;
- Café
- Dining room/ bar; and
- Front of house and back of house kitchens.
