Tasmania defies National Cabinet advice – aged care visits only allowed once a week

1 min read

The state began easing its coronavirus restrictions yesterday, but won’t be adhering to the new Visitor Access Code for at least the first week according to Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein.

Under the Code – which follows the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC)’s advice to the National Cabinet – residents can have two people visit per day in their room.

Instead, Mr Gutwein says that aged care visits will be only allowed once a week for a maximum of two visitors.

“Our pathway back will be gradual. It will be careful, and it will always be based on the health advice we have at that time,” he stated on Friday.

“We will continue to march to the beat of our own drum here in Tasmania.”

“If we find that we cannot move as we’ve outlined here because of advice from public health then we won’t.”

Tasmania has had 227 confirmed cases in total and 13 deaths, but has recorded no new cases for the past three days.
