10 straight days with zero cases and no new deaths in Victoria – positive case in aged care resident deemed to be ‘viral shedding’

The state has notched up its 10th straight day with no new cases and no new deaths, as the number of active cases in the state dropped to just four.

A significant result, considering the 49 cases reported at the same time last week, and the 183 active cases reported at the same time in October.

Encouragingly, Victoria has also seen strong testing numbers. Over 10,365 tests were received in the 24 hours, from 235,359 test results conducted over the last two weeks.

There were no active cases in aged care and just two people in Victoria were in hospital with coronavirus, with none in ICU.

There was a scare on Friday night with a positive case detected in an aged care resident who had a routine COVID-19 test while in hospital.

By Saturday however, the case was deemed to be one of viral ‘shedding’ where someone who has previously had the virus gives off signs of infection for weeks after recovery.

There are still cases out there

Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) testing commander Jeroen Weimar (pictured above) took the reins for the state’s daily COVID briefing, reminding Victorians that there are still cases out there.

“After 10 days of zero cases we remain very vigilant. I still have the view that there are still likely to be some traces of coronavirus out there in our community somewhere,” he said.

“That’s why there’s this really consistent and very diverse testing program which is such an important part of what we’re doing.”
