Japara closes 48-bed home at Wyong on NSW Central Coast – after funding for new residents blocked because of sanctions

Building limitations and “continued operational challenges” has been highlighted as the reasons for the closure of the Wyong Nursing Home in Mardi, 93km north of Sydney.

A spokesperson for Japara said the decision to close the facility, taken over by Japara in 2018 as part of its $39 million acquisition of four aged care homes owned by Riviera Health, was made in early June with the final few residents now being transferred to a new home.

They added the closure was neither COVID-related or due to an audit conducted by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission (ACQSC) earlier this year.

The March audit identified “immediate and severe risks to the safety, health and wellbeing of its residents,” resulting in a six-month sanction being imposed.

However, the decision would have meant the facility was unable to take on new residents until September.

Japara says it has yet to finalise future plans for the site.
