At a time when ageing policy is converging across borders, Ageing Australia CEO Tom Symondson has stepped into a new global governance role.

The head of Australia’s peak aged care body has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the International Federation on Ageing (IFA), an international non-government organisation working across government, academia, industry and civil society in nearly 80 countries.

The IFA holds general consultative status with the United Nations and is a non-State actor in official relations with the World Health Organization, positioning it as a key global forum shaping policy, rights and best practice for ageing populations worldwide.

Tom said the appointment was both a responsibility and an opportunity for Australia.

“I am honoured to join the Board of Directors of the IFA, further elevating Australia’s voice and influence on ageing and aged care globally,” he said.

“The IFA board brings together leaders from across the globe, advancing healthy ageing, equity and the rights and wellbeing of older people worldwide.”

He said the role reinforced the value of international collaboration at a time when many countries are grappling with similar demographic and system pressures.

“It’s a reminder that we are not alone in the challenges we face – and by sharing and learning with our international partners, we can turn these challenges into opportunities.”

The appointment also aligns with a broader outward-looking agenda.

“It’s a chance to showcase Australian innovation, forge new connections, and learn from some of the world’s best,” Tom added. “My appointment supports our three-year global engagement strategy, which will drive collaboration and knowledge sharing, and strengthen services for older people here and overseas.”

The IFA is currently led by President Graeme Prior, the CEO of Australian aged care provider Hall & Prior, who was recognised with a Member of the Order of Australia in 2025 for his contribution to aged care and Alzheimer’s disease research.
