After four years, Opal HealthCare receives DA approval for aged care community in Western Sydney

Australia's largest residential aged care operator has received the green light from Penrith City Council for a 129-bed aged care community in St Clair, 44km west of the Sydney CBD, following conciliation in the NSW Land and Environment Court.

The planned two-storey home, at 94-100 Explorers Way, St Clair, on a 1.057 hectare site backing onto the M4 motorway, was first reported by The Weekly SOURCE in 2021.

A spokesperson for Opal HealthCare said, "While members of the community were supportive, it took some time to gain the support of the Council, however the DA has now been approved as per our submission."

The home is due for completion in 2027, marking a project timeline of over six years.

Opal HealthCare has 138 residential aged care communities across New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, and South Australia, and recently announced the acquisition of Cranbrook Care's five residential aged care homes in Sydney.

The private operator is one of the few aged care providers pursuing aggressive expansion with new developments underway in Narwee and St Ives, Sydney, and Brighton and Caulfield, Melbourne.

Opal HealthCare is also pursuing co-located homes within retirement villages, forming a partnership with Aveo for four homes, and announcing a 190-home within Keyton's Bernborough Ascot precinct in Brisbane.

Pacific Equity Partners acquired a 50% stake in the provider in February this year, with the remaining 50% held by Singapore-based investment firm G.K. Goh Holdings.
