WA Country Health Service’s (WACHS) new $19.9 million aged and palliative care facility Gnullingoo Mia has officially opened in Carnarvon.
The 38-bed home features multi-purpose rooms with bariatric capabilities, as well as on-site accommodation for residents’ visiting friends and families.
According to WA Health Minister Roger Cook, the new home – double the capacity of the old – is bright, modern, and will provide “home comforts” to residents for many years.
“Carnarvon is a vibrant community that maintains a strong connection with their older residents. The development of Gnullingoo Mia Residential Care has been embraced by the local community from the beginning.
“Gnullingoo Mia means ‘our home’ in the local Inggarda language and I’d like to thank the community, staff and residents who have come together to make this truly fantastic care service a home,” he said.
WACHS Midwest Regional Director Rachele Ferrari said the facility puts patients first and creates a comfortable, welcoming environment, including locally-developed sensory gardens.
“The design incorporates plenty of wide, open spaces with easy access to the outdoor areas and internal views of the gardens.
“We want to give residents the opportunity to move around outside, relax and enjoy the outdoors as much as possible,” she said.
The facility was completed in October, with the first residents moving in shortly afterwards.
