Inspector-General of Aged Care Bill introduced to Parliament

1 min read

A week after Interim Inspector-General Ian Yates AM (pictured) appeared at the LEADERS SUMMIT asking for feedback from providers, the Inspector-General of Aged Care (Consequential and Transitional Provisions) Bill 2023 has been presented to the House of Representatives.

A key recommendation of the Aged Care Royal Commission, the Bill will establish an independent body with coercive information gathering powers designed to review the Commonwealth’s administration and regulation of the aged care system.

The Inspector-General will also have the power to investigate systemic issues across the aged care system, including complaints management processes, reporting its findings and recommendations to Government, to Parliament, and the public.

The Inspector-General will also report on the Government’s implementation of the Royal Commission’s recommendations, with Ian telling SATURDAY that the first report will be handed down later this year.

The former COTA Chief Executive will continue as interim Inspector-General pending the passage of the legislation, with the appointment of a permanent Inspector-General expected in the second half of 2023.

“The Albanese Government is ambitious for aged care and demands accountability and transparency from the sector,”
said Aged Care Minister Anika Wells on the Bill.

“This Bill reinforces the Albanese Government’s commitment to hold ourselves to the same high standards that we expect of the sector.”
