A 23-year-old man has appeared in court charged with rape, aggravated burglary, recklessly cause serious injury, common law assault and theft after a 90-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted as she slept inside Allity’s Tannoch Brae Aged Care home in Geelong, Victoria.

Victoria Police said the woman was asleep in bed inside the St Albans Park facility about 4.45am on Monday when Shane Huici allegedly broke in and sexually assaulted her.

The woman bravely attempted to fend the man off and raised the distress alarm, police said.

Huici, who is from St Albans Park, was arrested by Sexual Crime Squad detectives just after 9am on Tuesday and interviewed by police.

“I understand how much concern an incident like this causes in the community, so being able to make an arrest in just over 24 hours is reassuring,” Victoria Police Detective Acting Inspector Mark Burnett said.

“Locating the person responsible has been a significant priority for Sexual Crime Squad investigators ever since the matter was reported to police.”

Huici, who had been remanded in custody, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday morning. He made no application for bail and was remanded in custody for a committal mention hearing on 5 November.
