Melbourne developer gains approval to redevelop former quarry for mixed use project, including aged care

Melbourne developer Riverlee has received approval for its $2 billion mixed-use redevelopment of a 51-hectare former quarry site at New Epping.

The development will contain a health precinct, which will include a hospital and residential aged care facility. Construction has already begun on the hospital.

The project is located in Whittlesea, the fifth fastest growing local government area. It will be home to 220,000 people, expected to reach 380,000 by 2041. Healthcare is the largest employer in the area – accounting for more than 12,000 jobs in the area in the 2021 financial year.

Once operational, New Epping will lead to the creation of more than 7,200 jobs. It will require 622 construction jobs to complete the 15-year build.

City of Whittlesea Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson said, “Riverlee has created a vision for New Epping that builds on the cornerstones of our community — healthcare as our leading industry, the need for quality housing for people at all stages of life, and sustainability as a way of ensuring a bright and healthy future for our younger generations.

“With its challenging site conditions, the former Epping Quarry has laid dormant for decades.”

Founded in 1993 by Clement Lee, Riverlee is a Melbourne-based property group focusing on development and asset ownership across the commercial, residential and retail and hotel sectors. The operator for the hospital and aged care home is yet to be revealed.
