‘Barrel of gold’ development opportunity stalls after engaged retirement village developer drops out over COVID-19 concerns

1 min read

A working group behind plans for a retirement village in Muckleford, near Castlemaine, 127km northwest of Melbourne, lost their potential developer because of concerns about COVID-19.

The loss of the developer, right after the group was gifted a parcel of land from a local farming family, came while they were deep in the planning stages for the affordable housing project.

Ian Braybrook (pictured) and a group of ten locals formed the working group after recognising a demand for retirement living options in the central Victorian town.

According to the most recent census data 34.1 % of Castlemaine residents are aged over 55.

“A barrel of gold awaits those willing to have a go and (are) prepared to wait for a good return,” Mr Braybrook told the Midland Express.

An Alexander Shire Council spokesperson told the publication council had a desire to support the development of a retirement village.
