Residents attempt to shut down development of retirement village in Toowoomba – lawyers say it is ‘doomed to fail’

Lawyers for local property developer Barry Bernoth said an attempt by resident’s group, Large Street Trust, of Middle Ridge in Toowoomba, to shut down a retirement village development was “doomed to fail”.

Lawyers are saying objections against the 51-unit retirement village and a 43-unit townhouse development, claiming it didn’t meet code, meant the group failed to “fundamentally understand” the assessment process of an application.

Retirement village operator Oak Tree Group, who already run two retirement villages in Toowoomba, will also run this retirement village once it is completed, The Chronicle reported.

According to Villages.com.au, Toowoomba currently has 38 villages operating in the region and the most recent census data found 27.6% of the population is aged over 55.

The matter is set to be reviewed on March 5.
