The plans of Australia's largest supermarket operator, which recorded net profit after tax of $1.7 billion in 2023-24, to develop its 6.6ha site, opposite Cooroy Golf Club in Cooroy, 135km north of Brisbane, including a 120-bed aged care home, are now at public notification stage.
Woolworths' plans were first lodged with Noosa Council in May 2024 following a period of community consultation on uses for the site. Community consultation, based on more than 100 surveys conducted through door knocks, flyers, and an online survey, revealed local demand for residential aged care services.
In 2024, the DA was updated after Noosa Council requested further information, and a number of changes were made to the initial proposal, including placing the residential aged care facility closer to the riparian buffer on the south of the site and increasing the area of the residential aged care facility from 7,558sqm to 9,142sqm.
It's proposed that the planned residential aged care home will be separated from the shopping centre site to preserve aged care resident privacy and safety.
The DA opened for public notification on 14 July 2025 and will remain open until 1 August 2025.
The development will be Woolworths' first foray into aged care, and they do not plan to operate the facility. They are currently seeking to partner with an aged care operator.
