NSW residential aged care homes feel brunt of COVID-19

1 min read

In the week to 25 January 2024, NSW had more than double the number of aged care residents with COVID-19 than the next most-affected State and Territory.

23 deaths were recorded for the week, bringing the total number of deaths in residential aged care from the pandemic to 6,241.

Nearly 70% of residents have received a booster dose since the beginning of 2023, however, only 30% have received a jab in the past six months.

NSW had 691 active resident cases for the week to 25 January, compared with 337 for Queensland and 324 for Victoria.

The number of cases in residential aged care across Australia was down 18% in the week, as the new outbreak that commenced in late October 2023 begins to abate.

There were 1,750 new cases among residents recorded in aged care homes during the week, although only 347 homes recorded outbreaks, 62 fewer than the previous week.
