Building of $7.9M taxpayer-funded NSW retirement village uncertain after legal settlement

Warrumbungle Shire Council in NSW’s Central West and Armidale-based Boulos Constructions have reached a confidential legal agreement after the collapse of building a $7.9 million retirement village paid for by the local Council, NSW Government and Federal Government.

The building of the long-waited Three Rivers Regional Retirement Community, with 27 independent living units, community centre and an outdoor living space in the town of Dunedoo, was stopped and the contract with Boulos Constructions terminated in August 2018.

Warrumbungle Shire Council’s General Manager Roger Bailey told a town meeting about $3.6 million of the funding is remaining with an extra $2 million from the NSW Government after the Three Rivers Regional Retirement Community settlement with the builder.

“It is almost without doubt that the structures on the site will have to be demolished,” he said.

“Council has been exploring other opportunities for the site and with Dunedoo being at the centre of the Central West Orana Renewable Energy Zone it is likely that this site can be used to support the further development and advancement of the region.”
