The first 120 days of the New Aged Care Act: from intent to evidence

The first 120 days of the new Aged Care Act have delivered a clear message to providers: evidence now matters more than intent.

That was the central theme of yesterday’s Weekly SOURCE webinar, The First 120 Days of the New Aged Care Act, which drew strong attendance from CEOs, board directors, quality leaders and operational executives across the sector.

In a candid and practical discussion, Anchor Excellence Founder Cynthia Payne, Southern Cross Care Queensland COO Michael Wild, Health Metrics Chief Scientific Officer Lahn Straney, Catholic Healthcare Chief Quality Officer Lana Richards and DCM Group CEO Chris Baynes unpacked what the shift to a rights-based, evidence-driven framework looks like on the ground.

Four months into implementation, the conversation has moved well beyond principle. Strengthened Quality Standards, registration renewal requirements and new transparency settings are now being tested in day-to-day operations. Providers are being assessed on what can be demonstrated at service level – how care is delivered, documented, governed and improved in real time.

Panellists identified three early pressure points: variability in documentation at the point of care; governance traceability, particularly the board’s ability to evidence oversight; and inconsistencies across multi-site operations. Several speakers noted that compliance under the new Act is structural, not cosmetic – and that systems built for the previous regulatory environment are being exposed.

The webinar also explored what leaders are learning quickly: the need for sharper internal assurance mechanisms, better integration between clinical and governance reporting, and clearer alignment between rights-based principles and operational processes.

For those who could not attend live – or who want to revisit the insights – the full recording is now available.

As one panellist observed, the first 120 days have been instructive. The next 120 will be decisive.
