Two vacant lots, both slightly more than 10,000 square metres, have been approved by the WA Shire of Harvey for future housing targeting residents aged over 55.

The rapidly growing local government area in Western Australia’s South West region, located 140km south of Perth, has voted unanimously to approve the proposal for the plans in the town of Harvey.

Shire of Harvey councillors endorsed plans to rezone both lots from ‘public open space’ to ‘residential’ and will develop a business case for the future homes, which will return to council chambers later this year.

Along with the two lots, the shire have also identified land as a potential location for future aged accommodation and will begin looking into the potential use of the site.

Initial plans to develop the vacant blocks into aged housing came from Cr Robyn Coleman in March last year, when she urged council to investigate the need for social housing rising in the community.

She said there were a number of agencies already looking at getting the project going.

“This is a win, win, win for everybody,” she said.
