Will AI be the workforce saviour for delivering home care into retirement villages?

1 min read

We have been advocating for a long time the care workforce is maxed out (currently 16% of all workers) and young people won’t want to do it. Maybe we have been wrong.

The above commentary predicts 10-20% unemployment within 1-5 years thanks to the speed of AI expansion. The full article in the AFR Weekend Chanticleer column points to young people and people who insist on working from home being the first to be retrenched.

Tongue in cheek, we suggest that this may be good to great for retirement villages. Our village managers enrolled in our DCM Institute are already telling us their village residents are staying put in the village rather than moving to residential aged care, which is increasingly hard to get. This is a crisis in the making.

We can see 100,000 village residents requiring Level 4 Home Care packages and above in the next few years, with no excess care workers to look after them.

The AI retrenchment employee who wants to stay local and flexible may be ideal to retrain in home care.

The Federal Government and the community have to accept this will all require increased spending by both, because the current financial proposition doesn’t work.

Imagine the Centrelink bill with 10-20% (potentially long term) unemployment. Imagine the cost of adding 100,000 people to level 4 Home Care packages (average Government cost at $60,000 p.a.).

What is required is new thinking, or what Ian Yates calls ‘transformative’ thinking in an article in the coming SATURDAY digital magazine which we publish.

It is our 100th edition, and we are looking forward at what is known to be coming and what the leading thinkers say is required across retirement living, home care and residential care to deliver best client outcomes, a positive bottom line and a secure future. We are also offering an end of financial year discount to new subscribers – check it out HERE.

Meanwhile, think about your Work From Home strategy. It might be skating on thin AI ice.
