The 3,666sqm vacant site is part of the Western Australian Government’s housing diversity pipeline aiming to use “lazy government land” to bolster social and affordable housing.

Community housing provider Foundation Housing is seeking approval for a three-storey building with 34 residential apartments – 19 one-bedroom and 15 two-bedroom apartments in East Fremantle, a town 17km southwest of Perth’s CBD.

“The apartment mix has been deliberately configured to support a diverse range of household types, including singles, couples, small families and older residents, while aligning with the operational requirements of social housing,” states the application from TBB Planning on behalf of Foundation Housing.
“The proposal has been carefully designed to respond to the established East Fremantle context while facilitating appropriately scaled infill development in a well-located, high-amenity area.”

The $20.8 million social housing development is open for public comments until 29 March.

Founded in 2006, Foundation Housing is Western Australia’s largest state-based community housing provider, managing around 2,000 homes for more than 3,500 people across Perth, Broome and the Pilbara.
