80-year-old man given bail after allegedly sexually assaulting aged care resident

William John Newbold​, of Asquith, 26km northwest of Sydney's CBD,​​​​​​ was charged last Friday with aggravated sexual assault of a 87-year-old woman with cognitive impairment after he allegedly went into the aged care resident's room at a facility in Galston, 36km northwest of Sydney's CBD, on 8 January and 11 January.

The woman was taken to hospital but did not suffer any serious physical injuries, according to NSW Police Force in a statement.

Newbold was charged with aggravated sexual assault of a victim with cognitive impairment, aggravated sexual touching of another person, and failure to comply with a direction relating to firearm storage. 

In Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday, the registrar granted Newbold bail on the conditions he stay 500 metres from the aged care home where the alleged incident occurred and that he does not attempt to leave the country, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Police said the man had no criminal history and was a regular visitor of the aged care home.

In separate incidents, earlier this month a 29-year-old man was charged with sexually assaulting a 76-year-old aged care resident in Coffs Harbour on the NSW Mid North Coast, and in November last year, a 34-year-old man was charged with the alleged sexual assault of a 90-year-old resident in Bateau Bay on the NSW Central Coast.
