1 min read

As winter conditions worsen, the number of aged care staff and residents who contracted COVID-19 in the last week increased 14% to more than 2,000, the highest level seen since last July.

In the week to 19 June, 34 aged care residents died from COVID-19, taking the total toll for the pandemic to 7,424. Despite the recent increase in deaths, the 2025 COVID-19 fatality rate in residential aged care in 2025 is sitting at 1.4%, an improvement on the 3.3% fatality rate in 2022 and the 33% rate when COVID-19 reached Australia in 2020.

There were COVID-19 outbreaks in 268 aged care homes across the country last week, more than one in ten homes nationwide.

Case numbers were highest in NSW, with outbreaks in 92 homes and 684 staff and resident cases, followed by Victoria, with outbreaks in 88 homes and 654 cases.

June data also showed that 245 homes still have resident COVID-19 vaccination rates below 10%.

The overall vaccination rate for residents who have been vaccinated in the last six months is 55.6%, with more than 17,000 COVID-19 vaccinations delivered to aged care residents in the last 28 days.
