Mercy Health’s Mercy Place aged care home in Cairns, QLD, closed in 2021 finally sold

A 2.6 hectare parcel of land which included the 3,800sqm aged care facility has been sold with future plans for the site unclear.

Melbourne-based Mercy Health's 43-double-room Mercy Place closed in 2021 after the buildings were deemed not fit for purpose, and all 40 residents at the time were forced to find a new home.

Mercy Health, which has 21 residential care homes in Victoria, five in Western Australia, three in NSW, and one in Queensland, put the site for sale in October 2022. Before the sale, the land was estimated to be worth $4 million and the aged care home buildings $2 million.

The building, which included offices, kitchen, allied health rooms, nurses station, and in-ground pool, was completed in 1990, is likely to be demolished.

Allaying concerns the land would be bought by the state government for social housing, CBRE Cairns managing director Danny Betros said the property had sold to a consortium of local and southern developers.

The buyer, whose name has not been revealed, will take possession in January 2026.
