What the aged care watchdog’s latest report quietly revealed

1 min read

The Office of the Inspector-General of Aged Care (OIGAC) has released its annual report, uncovering an unexpected result in its first full year under the new Inspector-General, Natalie Siegel-Brown.

The report shows that of the five Key Performance Measures set for 2024-25, only two were achieved, one was not applicable, one was delivered three months late, and the much-anticipated review of My Aged Care Review remains “in progress”.

Although a draft of the My Aged Care Review was finalised during the year, the final report has still not been published – its release now expected by year-end. The initial review was announced in April 2024 by then Acting Inspector-General Ian Yates AM.

OIGAC attributes the delay to a review process “longer than anticipated” and “resourcing and capacity constraints” during its establishment phase:

“The complexity of the review process did not allow for the final review report to be completed and published by 30 June 2025,” the report states.

With OIGAC now live for more than two years, the delay raises questions about its resourcing and capacity to deliver on its oversight role for Australia’s aged care system.
