While WA is the growth state, residential aged care is falling behind. Last year only 800 beds of the 1,500 offered WA were taken up according to ACSA. All up WA is undersubscribed by 3,970 beds on a population allocation basis. As a result aged patients are being held in hospital beds at significantly greater cost per day to a care facility. ACSA points out that 4,000 beds is the equivalent of five Fiona Stanley Hospitals. For non WA readers, Fiona Stanley Hospital is a new hospital under construction in Perth and is the largest building project ever undertaken for the Government of Western Australia.
