Care minutes are here to stay: Ansell Strategic’s latest board pack

1 min read

With the re-election of the Labor Government, mandatory staffing targets are likely to remain in place for some time, predicts Cam Ansell, Managing Director of advisory firm Ansell Strategic in its Board Back for the March 2025 quarter.

Cam makes the forecast while highlighting that only 37% of residential aged care homes met both the 24/7 RN and care minute targets in the December quarter, down from 42% the previous quarter.

Just over one quarter of homes failed to meet either target.

In addition, the Ansell Strategic analysis also shows there was little correlation between compliance with the mandatory minutes and care outcomes.

"Quality compliance levels were found to be strong for many providers that had been unable to meet the minute thresholds. Conversely, some of the poorest performing homes were found to have complied with the mandated minutes while achieving a 4 and 5 star rating," the Board Pack states.

The Board Pack also notes "encouraging signs" of development activity. Large providers are looking to "rejuvenate" their property portfolios while residential aged care operators c\are getting into assisted living alternatives.

These comments echo Cam's 2025 LEADERS SUMMIT presentation, where he spoke of anticipated growth in the assisted living category – see link below.

"M&A activity is also picking up as investors read the growing gap between demand and supply of aged care services," the Board Pack states.
