Dr Rodney Jilek to take patients living with dementia aged care providers “refuse” to take

Effective immediately, Not For Profit Community Home Australia has entered into an agreement with Nepean and Blue Mountains Local Health District to provide specialised dementia accommodation for hospital patients living with dementia.

Dementia care and disability support provider Community Home Australia was founded in 2020 by Dr Rodney Jilek and gerontologist Nicole Smith, with a mission to provide support in a home-like environment. Residents are funded through the NDIS.

In their latest deal, five hospital patients from the Nepean and Blue Mountains LHS stuck in acute-care hospital wards will move to Kora House, apartment-style supported living in Westmead, 30km west of the Sydney CBD, which opened in July. Each resident will have their own fully furnished, self-contained studio apartment and a 24/7 support team.

"Each of these people have been living on acute wards for some time because the aged care system refuses to take them," said Rodney.

"No person with cognitive impairment should be living on an acute hospital ward and hospitals shouldn't be used as pseudo aged care and dementia services."

Community Home Australia is in the final stages of expanding its Bali dementia resort, Aashaya Jasri Resort. Late last year, the organisation announced it is opening a palliative care service in Canberra for people living with dementia, Kot Home.

Dr Jilek has voiced strong opposition to the Government's Star Ratings system.
