The rate of COVID-19 vaccinations administered in residential aged care dropped off sharply in the three months to November 2023, as case numbers eased and vaccine fatigue set in.
In the three months to the end of November, just more than 8,000 vaccinations were administered to residents in residential aged care - on average about 100 per day.
The result was deadly.
From November until 8 February 2024, 345 residents have died, more than three times the 111 that died in the three months prior.
Vaccination numbers in residential aged care have picked up since November last year. There have been more than 25,000 jabs given in aged care facilities since the start of December, an average of about 340 per day.
As a result, the vaccination rate in residential aged care, which has been hovering at a very low 30% in recent weeks, rose to 35.1% in the week to 8 February 2024.
There were 1,131 positive resident cases during the week, and nearly 260 facilities experiencing outbreaks.
In total, 6,276 Australian aged care residents have died during the COVID-19 pandemic.
