18,650 social and affordable homes funded as 370 homes set for repurpose

The Australian Government's flagship Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF) has agreed to fund 9,284 social and 9,366 affordable homes through 279 successful projects under the first two funding rounds of the HAFF and National Housing Accord Facility.

“Every one of these homes represents hope for a family doing it tough – whether it’s a mum escaping violence, a veteran needing somewhere safe, or a nurse priced out of her own community,” said Clare O'Neill, the Federal Minister for Housing.

“This round was progressed much faster than previous rounds with more than 18,000 homes now in stages of building and planning, a clear sign that the HAFF is hitting its stride.

“We’re creating a pipeline of homes that will make a difference for decades.”

Round One of the HAFF launched in January 2024, with a target to contract all preferred projects by June 2025. Successful projects from this round are expected to deliver more than 4,283 social and 9,366 affordable homes nationwide. Round Two opened in late December 2024.

Despite these commitments, the HAFF has faced strong criticism for failing to deliver any purpose-built homes since its inception on November 1, 2023. Former Opposition leader Peter Dutton had threatened to scrap the policy if the Coalition claimed Government.

To date, only 370 homes have been delivered through the HAFF, primarily via developers releasing more homes onto the market, or the purchase and conversion of existing dwellings into affordable or social housing.
