Developer Second Oak Tree said in its development application the complex would provide an affordable and sociable accommodation option and other similar developments at Latrobe and Launceston had been taken up.
“The 10 units, in two buildings, will have their own kitchenette, ensuite and courtyard but share a communal living area in plans approved by Devonport of developments are very big on the mainland,” Second Oak Tree director Elke Schroers said.
“Our studios are designed to a high standard suitable for corporate leasing. But we also want to provide a different housing option for those not wanting to head into a gated retirement village community.
“We believe there is a market out there for what we are offering. The complex is within walking distance to shops and other amenities and allows people to live in where there is a network of support if you want it, but you are not living in each others’ pockets.”
In its DA, Second Oak Tree said it is not possible to ensure older, single women will reside in the buildings, but that is the preference.
