mecwacare completes 22nd aged care home
The contemporary 77-bed aged care home retains the original 1850s facade.
The Not For Profit Victorian aged care provider has finalised John Hood Terrace in Richmond, 3km east of Melbourne's CBD.
The 77-bed aged care home is a redevelopment of the original 1850s buildings, retaining the original facades, and turning it into a contemporary facility.
The home features lounges, a private dining room, quiet nooks, hairdressing salon, and allied health rooms. Natural light-filled dining spaces open onto landscaped terraces and balconies, bringing the natural environment into the home.
The project's architects were LiFE Architecture with Sora Interiors Architecture & Design, while the builders were Total Construction.
LiFE Architecture said: “Our design approach focuses on familiarity, ease of movement and a genuine sense of belonging - creating a place that feels warm, uplifting and deeply connected to its community.”
mecwacare has also significantly expanded its portfolio through acquisitions. In 2023, it took over four homes from Royal Freemasons – Flora Hill, Susan Barton House, Wahroonga and The Pines.
In February 2024, it added a vacant home in Bendigo, and it is currently undertaking a $30 million redevelopment of its Ballan aged care home, acquired in 2021, which is expected to reopen next year.
Earlier this year, mecwacare also acquired the 51-bed Allanvale Private Nursing Home in Altona Meadows, in Melbourne’s southwest.
