The NSW Government has unveiled plans for the new $700 million-plus Shellharbour Hospital in the Illawarra region, which will include new and expanded aged care facilities.

Concept designs for the new hospital, to be located at Dunmore near Shellharbour Junction station, are now available online; a NSW Health Infrastructure spokesperson has told The Weekly SOURCE that the hospital’s aged care facilities will include:

  • an expanded sub-acute and acute geriatrics inpatient unit;
  • a new geriatric psychiatric unit;
  • a new geriatric day hospital for outpatients;
  • an expanded older persons acute mental health inpatient unit; and
  • a new older persons mental health rehabilitation unit.

“The layout of the facility will be confirmed once further planning and design work is completed. Main works construction is planned to begin in 2024, pending completion of the design and planning approvals.

“The new Shellharbour Hospital is part of the NSW Government’s record $11.9 billion investment in health infrastructure over four years to 2025-26, with nearly a third of the capital allocation in this financial year going towards regional and rural health facilities,” the spokesperson said.
