Three new cases reported in Victoria and eight active in aged care as state flags first possible case of COVID-19 reinfection in Australia

Victoria had three new cases of COVID-19 reported on Wednesday, bringing the state’s total number of active cases to 109.

This is 83% down on the 657 active cases reported at the same time last month.

There are now just 8 cases linked to aged care, making up 7% of the state’s total.

Victoria’s 14-day rolling average of new cases dropped to 6.2 in metropolitan Melbourne and 0.4 in regional Victoria, down from the previous day’s totals of 6.4 and 0.5.

The state’s death toll stayed steady at 817, with no new deaths reported.

And there were 10 Victorians in hospital, with none in ICU.

First case of COVID-19 reinfection in Australia?

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews revealed that the new case reported on Tuesday is a person who may have been re-infected with COVID-19 – a concern for health authorities.

“The person from yesterday who tested positive twice – the first time back in July – he is currently regarded as a reinfection of coronavirus, so he will be recorded as a positive case,” he said.

“It is through an abundance of caution that we are assuming that it is a positive case, rather than the person shedding after the original infection. There have been very few reported cases of reinfection around the world.”
