QLD retirement villages: operators now required to buy back ‘freehold’ village homes within 18 months

1 min read

In 2017 the QLD government mandated that village operators must buy back vacant village units within 18 months – being the owner of the home under a land lease or lease license contract.

Playing catch up, the government now wants operators of freehold villages – where the resident owns the home – to also buy the home within 18 months. There are 2,201 freehold village homes (7.4%) in QLD.

Sounds fair, but is it? And it will be expensive.
