John Hindmarsh AM: Retirement village pioneer and philanthropist leaves lasting legacy

John Hindmarsh, who has passed away at the age of 84, was the Founder and Chairman of Hindmarsh, the company he established in 1979.

A visionary builder, philanthropist, and entrepreneur, he built Hindmarsh into a national property and construction business, delivering over $7 billion in projects across Australia and overseas.

The Hindmarsh business owns three retirement villages in the ACT:

Marigal Gardens Village was completed at the end of 2024.

Born in Manly and educated at Sydney Grammar School, John studied architecture before switching to development and a degree in building at the University of NSW. One of his earliest projects as a builder was a military training facility in Papua New Guinea.

He and his wife Rosanna fell in love with Canberra after moving there in 1971 for a role with builder AV Jennings. They raised their family in Canberra and founded Hindmarsh in the family home in 1979 with a single employee.

John’s contributions extended beyond the building industry. He chaired the National Gallery of Australia Foundation, co-founded Hands Across Canberra (one of Australia’s leading community funds), led major fundraising efforts for the arts, and was instrumental in creating the Canberra Business Council.

Made a Member of the Order of Australia for his services to the Canberra community through construction and philanthropy, John is remembered as a passionate champion of education, innovation, and a better future for the cities he loved.
