SA village operator Karidis asks State Government to expand McLaren Vale boundaries to allow retirement villages and aged care

1 min read

The Karidis Corporation wants the Government to shift the property boundaries to include land bounded by Aldersey St and Johnston Rd as well as a neighbouring 19ha site to enable housing, aged care and community developments.

Both sites are currently zoned character preservation district and primary production.

A family-owned and run operator, Karidis was founded by Gerry Karidis and currently has eight villages in SA and one in Victoria, with another due to open soon. They are also one of SA and Victoria’s largest private property developers, with interests in commercial, residential, serviced apartments and car parks.

The zoning request follows a recent report by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) which recommended retaining protection for the area’s character preservation districts but suggested a statutory review process be introduced to allow for amendments to their boundaries.

They will have to wait however – it’s anticipated the boundary review will take around 12 months to complete.
