St Basil’s chairman steps down after 44 deaths linked to home

1 min read

As we reported in our newsletter The Daily Resource, the Chairman of St Basil’s Homes for the Aged in Fawkner, Konstantinos Kontis handed in his resignation earlier this month.

The home was the site of one of the largest aged care outbreaks in Victoria, with 216 confirmed cases (only one still active) linked to the facility and 44 deaths – making it the state’s deadliest aged care outbreak so far.

The Greek Orthodox Church, which operates the home, said the Board expressed gratitude for Mr Kontis’ longstanding contribution.

He had also reportedly been asked to stay on as an ordinary member of the Board of Directors until some practical and legal issues had been finalised.

Reverend Archimandrite Father Evmenios Vasilopoulos, Archiepiscopal Vicar of Northcote, is set to step into the role as new Chairman.
