IRT’s AI falls predictor technology wins iTnews Benchmark Awards 2024

Technology developed by Not For Profit retirement living, aged care and home care provider IRT that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to prevent falls among older people has won Australian Technology Project of the Year and Best Health Project in the iTnews Benchmark Awards 2024.

The falls predictor system uses data collected through assessment tools, care plans, and allied health reports, as well as taking into account what medications people are taking, sleeping habits, and weight changes.

The data is fed through an AI and machine learning model and can assess if a home care customer or aged care resident is at higher risk of falling.

"We’ve been able to move to a very proactive approach to fall prevention," said IRT CEO Patrick Reid.

"Our staff are working with our customers and residents to put in place strategies specific to the individual to help prevent their future fall risk."

Preventative strategies include physiotherapy and changes in diet, medication, or the environment, depending on an individual’s needs.

“Winning this award is an amazing achievement for everyone involved. We were up against some very steep competition, and I am thrilled for all of our IT, Home Care and Aged Care Centre staff who worked together on this project to achieve success,” Patrick said.
