Aged care watchdog does not have resources to check in-home services – progress on monitoring moving “more slowly than originally planned”

The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission (ACQSC) provided this information to the Royal Commission, acknowledging it has fallen short of timelines and budget allocations.

The watchdog says staff attrition and the introduction of more thorough “quality standards” has led to progress on monitoring moving, “more slowly than originally planned”.

There is a “high level of attrition” among the “quality assessors” who do home care checks according to the ACQSC, and new standards require more time gathering evidence and writing reports.

This has meant the ACQSC has had to target areas believed to be at highest risk.

The ACQSC noted soaring rates of non-compliance in residential aged care, up from 10.9% in 2018-19 to 22.8% in 2019-20, as a reason for diverting resources.
