In Victoria, retirement villages will have Private Aged Care forced on them. Why?

1 min read

The Victorian Government knows residential aged care – they are the only State Government that builds aged care homes. They know they don’t have enough.

Villages will fill the gap.

See the chart above. The number of aged care beds in Victoria has dropped 12.4% in 10 years when the Baby Boomers are about to hit, increasing the demand by 40%.

Since 2023 as the chart shows, virtually no new beds have been built. In fact beds are closing, having arrived at the end of their efficient life.

What are retirement village operators going to do if there is no aged care beds for residents to move on to from the village when needed?

Answer: they will have to look after the resident themselves.

The Victorian Government knows this, which is why it has brought in the legislation below.

Private Aged Care

Victoria is not alone. Every state will have the same challenges.

We firmly believe that up to half the retirement village beds will be residential aged care beds within five years. The customers will demand it and the operator will not be able to avoid it. This is already being called Private Aged Care.
