Flinders University trialling support program for dementia carers in China

1 min read

The South Australian university is spearheading a new initiative to provide support for the carers of people living with dementia in China.

iSupport for Dementia is an online knowledge and skills training program developed by the World Health Organisation, designed to combat the mental and physical health problems experienced by carers of people living with dementia.

The program has been adapted for Australia, and Flinders is now working with a team of national and international experts to see if it can be rolled out in China.

The project has received a $400,000 grant from the National Foundation for Australian-China Relations, which will see the program evaluated in trails with over 200 carers in Adelaide, plus regions of Beijing, Xi’an, Taipei, Hong Kong and Macau.

More than 11 million people live with dementia in China, roughly 20% of the world’s global dementia population, and Flinders isn’t the first local organisation looking to lend its expertise.

As we reported in 2020, Southern Cross Care, Eldercare and Life Care have secured a contract to deliver coaching and development to a provider in Shandong.

Bolton Clarke and Shane Moran’s Provectus Care have also pursued opportunities in China in recent years.
