SA: Redevelopment plan for Helping Hand village knocked back: 50% open space required

1 min read

The Not For Profit’s plan to demolish two buildings to make way for nine two-storey apartments at its North Adelaide retirement village has been refused by Adelaide City Council’s planning panel for being at odds with the historic character of the area plus concerns about open space, the development’s bulk, traffic and landscaping.

Panel member Colleen Dunn added the development needed at least 50% of landscaped open space and the application only had 21%.

“I understand it is retirement housing … but people who are living here still like to potter and plant and do these things outside.”

Helping Hand will now need to go to the Environment, Resources & Development Court if they want to appeal the decision.
