The number of prison inmates requiring aged care in SA has grown from 41 to 71 in the past five years; the oldest inmate is now 86. The cause is longer prison sentences and the prosecution of ageing paedophiles following the lifting of the statute of limitations on sex offences committed before December 1982. 55 of the 71 prisoners have been jailed for sexual assault, 10 for homicide, two for fraud and one each for dealing or trafficking drugs or related crimes.
