There were 10 new cases in Victoria recorded in the 24 hours leading up to Tuesday, bringing the state’s total number of active cases to 326.

For context, this represents an 87% drop on the 2,700 active cases at the same point in August.

The rolling 14-day average of cases has fallen to 18.2 in metropolitan Melbourne from Monday’s total of 20.3, and remained steady at 0.6 in regional Victoria.

It wasn’t all good news however, with seven more deaths confirmed.

Six of these have been linked to aged care facilities, and include one man in his 60s, one man in his 70s, one woman and two men in their 80s and one woman and one man in their 90s.

There are also 46 Victorians currently in hospital, with five in ICU and four on a ventilator.

Andrews to take Fed Govt to task on regulator

In his daily press briefing, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews flagged he would be “privately raising concerns” with the Federal Government about the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission (ACQSC) amid news that only 13% of the state’s facilities had received a visit from the regulator.

“I’ll put it to you this way, to the extent that I have concerns, I’ll have a discussion with the federal government rather than necessarily speaking about those matters at a press conference,” he said.

Mr Andrews added he believes there are ongoing problems with the aged care system.

“We are having a royal commission into this sector and I think we’re having it for a very, very good reason,” he said.

“The focus is trying to do everything we can to make these environments as safe as we can. But it’s a joint and a shared thing. It is not a sector that’s run by us.”
