Aged care gastro outbreak grabs headlines with seven deaths – but operator tells a different story

News that seven residents at Regis’ Yeronga facility in Brisbane had died from a gastroenteritis outbreak were widely reported by Channel Nine and Seven last week, following a 26-day lockdown at the facility.

Regis firmly tells another story. In a statement, the provider says: “These residents had a range of pre-existing ailments and while they may have been affected by gastroenteritis, in no case has gastroenteritis been recorded as the cause of death.”

Sadly ‘Gastro link claimed as seven dead at Brisbane aged care home’ makes for a much more exciting headline.
