Aged care not an option for abuse victims

1 min read

According to Professor Helen Milroy, one of the commissioners to the Royal Commission into Child Sexual Abuse, if you have survived child sexual abuse in an institution, going into an aged care home is not an option.

"A lot of people have said with us they will not go back into care, they cannot go back into care and they do not see that as an option for them," Prof Milroy told a conference in Perth this week.

Prof Milroy said most people the commission spoke to had post-traumatic stress disorder and are often haunted by intrusive memories.

She said these symptoms are extremely difficult to treat and when people become cognitively impaired or get dementia, these symptoms can become stronger.

Nearly 4000 people have told their experiences to the Royal Commission, with a total of 10,000 survivors expected to speak before it is scheduled to end in December 2017.
