New SATURDAY magazine: a home, not an institution - is Abbeyfield the answer for low-income seniors?

In the leafy suburbs of Melbourne, on an ordinary street, sits an ordinary house. There is no signage or nurses’ station.

But inside, 10 older Australians sit down together for a home-cooked lunch, prepared by a live-in housekeeper who also checks in on their wellbeing.

Older women targeted for affordable housing plan in Melbourne’s southeast

Community Housing Ltd has proposed a 13-storey apartment tower in Dandenong, 29km southeast of Melbourne’s CBD, offering 86 homes for vulnerable groups.
