Almost 50% of Victoria’s active cases linked to aged care but “there has been some stability” – Andrews

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews confirmed the state recorded 41 new coronavirus cases on Monday, the lowest daily increase in over two months.

It’s the lowest increase since June 26 where 40 cases were recorded.

There were nine new deaths including a woman in her 70s, a woman and three men in their 80s, and a woman and three men in their 90s. Eight of these deaths have been linked to aged care.

Almost half (873) of the state’s total active cases (1,781) are now linked to aged care, but while 93 facilities are still experiencing outbreaks, the Premier Andrews said it “is a number that’s falling.”

“There has been some stability come to residential aged care and we’re very pleased that everyone is working together to drive those numbers down to as low as they can be, given the underlying vulnerability of so many residents in those settings.”

The major aged care outbreaks include:

  • 232 cases linked to BaptCare Wyndham Lodge Community in Werribee (17 new cases since Friday)
  • 215 cases linked to Epping Gardens Aged Care in Epping (no new cases since Friday)
  • 206 cases linked to St Basil’s Home for the Aged in Fawkner (no new cases since Friday)
  • 162 cases linked to Estia Aged Care Facility in Ardeer (no new cases since Friday)
  • 139 cases linked to Kirkbrae Presbyterian Homes in Kilsyth (no new cases since Friday)
  • 127 cases linked to Twin Parks Aged Care in Reservoir (no new cases since Friday)
  • 124 cases linked to Cumberland Manor Aged Care Facility in Sunshine North (1 new case since Friday)
  • 119 cases have been linked to BlueCross Ruckers Hill Aged Care Facility in Northcote (3 new cases since Sunday)
  • 118 cases linked to Japara Goonawarra Aged Care Facility in Sunbury (1 new case since Friday)
  • 117 cases linked to Estia Aged Care Facility in Heidelberg (1 less case since Friday)

There are 266 Victorians in hospital, with 25 in ICU. Of these, 17 are on a ventilator.

“This strategy is working” – Andrews

Mr Andrews also said numbers indicated that Victoria was on track, a day after announcing an extension to the state’s Stage 4 restrictions.

“On 5th of August, we had 725 cases. On the 7th of September, we have 41 cases. These numbers are coming down, this strategy is working. We are bringing a sense of control to this and we’ll drive these numbers down further,” he said.

“I’m grateful, I’m proud of every single Victorian and the work they’re doing, without that, we simply can’t keep driving these numbers down.”
